Terraced rice fields in Nagatani, located on the border of Osaka and Hyogo Prefectures, present a rare beautiful countryside view in the suburb of Osaka. The terraced rice fields cultivated on slopes have water supply and drainage equipment made of stones called "gama", indicating the history of hardship endured by the local farmers. This area had very little flatland with affluent water sources. People then took many years to level off a mountain top to continue irrigation work and gradually increased the number of rice fields for their descendants. As you can imagine, the local people have developed a strong attachment to the terraced rice fields. This landscape of layered rice fields born from the dedication of the residents has been selected as one of Japan's top 100 terraced rice fields along with those in Chihaya-akasaka-mura.
