The train used for the "SL Banetsu Story," the C57-180, is affectionately known as the "Lady."
The Banetsu West Line, on which the D51, a famous model of steam locomotive, operated. The view from the windows of the train is always changing, so the stretch between Aizu-Wakamatsu Station and Niitsu Station is fondly nicknamed "the romantic railway of forests and water." The smoke rising from the steam locomotive above a beautiful natural landscape blessed with dense forests and water brings a feeling of warmth to the snow-covered scenery.
The "SL Banetsu Story" express, which does not operate on a regular basis, is a restored C57-180 steam locomotive that was preserved at Niitsu City First Elementary School. Large numbers of visitors, including railway aficionados, climb aboard in each of the four seasons to enjoy a charming journey of steam whistles, traditional ekiben boxed lunches, moderate slopes, bridges, and tunnels.
