The New National Stadium will serve as the main venue for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020. The National Stadium, built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, was dismantled in 2015. The new structure was built on the old lot with an investment of approximately ¥156.9 billion. The three-year construction period was completed on November 30th, 2019. The New National Stadium will be called the "Olympic Stadium" during the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, serving as the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies as well as various competitions.
With five above-ground floors and two below-ground floors, the New National Stadium is about twice as big as the old National Stadium, at approximately 69,600 ㎡. The stadium features a "sunbeam" motif comprised of five different colors ranging from green to tan in a gradation from the floor to the sky. The new structure seats 60,000. Utilizing wood materials from all 47 prefectures of Japan, the concept of the New National Stadium is that it is a "stadium in the forest" decorated with substantial trees and greenery. The roof is a hybrid construction combining this wood with a steel frame. This is a stadium incorporating a distinctly Japanese look, harmonizing nature with the cityscape.
